Season 5, The Voice

Matthew Schuler cracks top 5 on iTunes for The Voice

The song choice was one of the least imaginative on Monday’s episode of The Voice.

I mean, serving up “Hallelujah” to a fine vocalist is like firing a fastball down the middle of the plate to a proven power hitter.

But Matthew Schuler made it work, of course.

And Voice viewers are lapping it up.

This morning when voting ended, Matthew’s studio version of “Hallelujah” was sitting at number two on iTunes overall singles download list.

The only song above it: Eminem’s “The Monster.”

And on the iTunes pop chart, Matthew landed at number one.

All that means Matthew will score bonus points toward remaining in the competition, though remaining in the competition was pretty much a sealed deal the moment he sang his first note Monday night.

On the other hand, Austin Jenckes, Josh Logan and Jonny Gray might want to be a little nervous if fan voting follows the same pattern as iTunes popularity. Let’s just say their songs from Monday didn’t do nearly so well on the charts.

Of the 12 songs from last night, Lancaster’s James Wolpert was ninth on the iTunes overall chart at 11 a.m., checking in at 58.

After that, you have to drop all the way to 106 before you encounter Austin’s “It’s a Good Day to be Alive.”

In fact, four previous performances from the show fall between James and Austin on the iTunes chart.

Here’s the complete rundown.

#2: Matthews Schuler, “Hallelujah” — number 1 on pop chart

#16: Jacquie Lee, “Love is Blindness” — number 10 on pop chart

#28: Cole Vosbury, “Adorn” — number 16 on pop chart

#36: Will Champlin, “Demons” — number 19 on pop chart

#37: Ray Boudreaux, “All of Me” — number 20 on pop chart

#44: Caroline Pennell, “Wake Me Up” — number 22 on pop chart

#46: Kat Robichaud, “Sail” — number 7 on alternative chart

#57: Tessanne Chin, “My Kind of Love” — number 27 on pop chart

#58: James Wolpert, “Mr. Brightside” — number 8 on alternative chart

#106: Austin Jenckes, “It’s a Great Day to be Alive” — number 28 on country chart

#118: Josh Logan, “Man in the Mirror” — number 46 on pop chart

#144: Jonny Gray, “Another Day in Paradise” — number 2 on rock chart

Check back tonight for a live blog as the results come in.

Wow. How is James Wolpert ony at #58?? Glad to see Ray Boudreau up there – I was worried about him.

No idea. I thought that was a really risky song choice for him and that he sang and performed it very well. But lots of The Voice singers were very, very good last night.
