Check out the iTunes Top 200 singles this morning, and you’ll find the names of two of the final four on American Idol — Jena Irene and Alex Preston.
But they aren’t there because of the songs performed on Wednesday night’s Top 4 show.
As of 9 a.m., Jena was sitting at number 187 with her earlier version of “Creep.” And Alex was at 189 with last week’s cover of “Say Something.”
The lackluster performance of the Top 4 Idol releases — I could note that eight from Monday’s episode of The Voice are still in the Top 200 — isn’t surprising given Idol’s ineptitude.
Wanna download Jena’s superb “Can’t Help Falling in Love?” You won’t find it on iTunes.
How about Caleb Johnson’s wonderful take on “Maybe I’m Amazed?” Nope, it isn’t there either.
The Idols released just one of last night’s three songs on iTunes. And only Jess got to release her best.
Here’s how those songs are doing on the genre charts.
* Caleb Johnson, “Traveling Band” — #7 on the rock chart
* Alex Preston, “Too Close” — #64 on the pop chart
* Jena Irene, “Heartbreaker” — #70 on the alternative chart
* Jess Meuse, “You and I” — #73 on the country chart.
That looks like Caleb is kicking butt on iTunes.
But let’s remember that the number one song on the pop chart (“Problems” by last week’s Idol visitor Ariana Grande) is also number one overall.
The number one song on the rock chart (Kat Perkins’ “Get Lucky” from The Voice; there’s that show again) is only #65 on the overall singles chart.
